Obituary of Phillip Manuel South
Phillip M South November 28,1949 - November 9, 2017
Phil was born the first and only son of William and Virginia South on November 28, 1949 in Booneville Mississippi. In 1951 Phil and his family relocated to Portland Oregon, where Phil excelled in sports as a youth, first as a pitcher and later playing football for Madison High School.
He graduated in 1967 and went on to attend Portland State University, where he pledged to Sigma Delta Omega fraternity. After a few years as a business and art major, Phil left school to devote his time to the business he founded while still in college. His store, Plasticraft, located on Lombard in Portland, was a local resource for artists and hobbyists as part of the developing craft industry.
Throughout his career, Phil worked in many different positions within the industry he loved, eventually settling into his most recent role as an independent sales representative. Phil was also a hobbyist in his own right, and enjoyed many different creative pursuits including painting, candle and jewelry making, guitar playing, sculpture and mixed media. He was a lover of music, poetry, creative writing, and had a deep appreciation for all forms of human expression.
Phil loved the outdoors, and often found inspiration in the natural world. Camping and fishing at the Crooked River in Central Oregon became a family tradition, and one that Phil cherished deeply. Phil's positive mental attitude, strength of spirit and insatiable work ethic were apparent to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Phil passed away on November 9, 2017 in Corinth Mississippi surrounded by family and friends. Phil is survived by his special companion Karen Boe of Vancouver, sister Jennifer South of Longview, and sons Matt and Sam South of Vancouver. He will be greatly missed by his many family members, friends and colleagues.
Phil will be laid to rest on Friday, November 17, 2017 at Fern Prairie Cemetery in Camas, WA. A viewing will precede at Brown's Funeral Home in Camas from 9 am to 1 pm.
