It was a shock to hear about Diane’s passing. I’m sure it was that way for many of her friends.
My earliest memory of Diane was meeting her on a walk with her sons – John and Stevie. John was riding a bike and Stevie was on Diane’s hip. We introduced ourselves and made plans to get together. John was Pat and Diane’s oldest son and Devin was my youngest. Our son’s remained friends from then on. Although the boys went to different pre schools, they joined together at St. Joseph and La Salle Catholic High School.
When the boys started St. Joseph it was clear that this group of boys, which grew quickly, was going to be a unique challenge as most of the classmates were boys. Quickly a “Mom’s Group” was formed to help one other and support one another, and to celebrate each year that we (Mom’s) survived and the boys advanced another grade. It had to be exhausting being their teacher. Diane was so instrumental in being a leader and forming this cohesive group and keeping us together. On to high school – La Salle how quickly the years flew by and then on to the boys next chapter of their lives.
Diane was a phenomenally talented person, as was Diane’s Mother. She and her Mother organized a Christmas Bazaar for many years where one could purchase some marvelous quality handcrafted items. I stood back and admired what she could easily do. I always purchased items and I know that when I bring out my Christmas decorations this year - many more memories of Diane will surface. I’m so glad I have them.
Diane was a very giving person. She and Pat helped me move items I had in storage into my apartment after my divorce and she very graciously hosted a 50th Birthday party for me. The Mom’s Group members came out to attend Devin’s Wedding to Jennifer. Soon after, at the age of 54, I moved away from Vancouver to live in Idaho.
When you look back over the years I realize times where I was absent to our friendship and regret that immensely. I feel pride (as I think Diane would) that John and Devin are in touch so hopefully the legend of friendship will continue. I’m profoundly thankful for her friendship and for knowing her and her family. Rest in Peace Diane.
