Mary Helena Meltesen peacefully passed away on November 28, 2008 in Vancouver, Washington. Born on September 21, 1920 in Massachusettes, Mary was 88 years old. Mary grew up in Iowa, The oldest of 7 children. She went to the University of Iowa and received her Masters of Education degree. In 1943 she married Charles Meltenson and became a Military wife. Her husband was captured in [? the battle of ???] WWII and sent to a prison camp in Poland, so she joined the WACs to serve her country. When Charles was liberated in 1945, Mary was honorably discharged from the service. For the next 20 years she raised her family living in many places while Charles was serving in Athens Greece, Germany, and Washington DC. Mary had four children, Anne Trujillo, Gayle Melt esen, Lynne Meltesen, and Jay Meltesen. Now there are 6 grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Mary was a wonderful full time mother, but still managed to be active in politics, she supported Native American Rights interests, and was involved in Health reform projects. She also taught Geometry for several years in San Francisco, where she lived the last [?20?] years of her life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. "She did everything well." She will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery with her husband, there will be a private family gathering. Brown's Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Camas has been entrusted with arrangements.
