Dear Family of Jan: Please accept my deep regret and condolence on your father's passing. I have only the fondest memories of Jan. Although we were both physicists and colleagues while he was here at Brown, we worked on very different areas and never collaborated in research. Yet, he was always interested in finding out just what I was working on to chat about it. The chatting consisted more of trying to understand as deeply as he could what was the state and significance of new things in my field. Nothing trivial for him! He always wanted to get the full story: warts and all. All this was coupled with a genuine and deep kindness and open friendliness of the rarest sort in my experience. I missed his presence when he finally moved away in retirement and thought of him often. I will still have those pleasant memories.

My deepest condolences to Elena and Jan Jr. I was a secretary on 6th Floor North in the Barus and Holley Building at Brown University. I worked on the same floor as Professor Tauc. He was a gentleman and was soft spoken. I remember him fondly. Sincerely, Evelyn Zigas
