Joan, I'm unable to attend Jack's memorial service tonight. I just wanted you to know that I thought the world of Jack. I only knew him for a few years when I worked for him in SLA (1997-2000) as part of Dept 3. But he quickly became one of the best people that I ever worked for or with. I loved his honesty, his direct communication, his caring, and especially his strength and determination. It was inspiring to me as I'm sure it was to many others. He gave me some great memories, stories, and lessons that I still keep close to my heart. Please accept my family's condolences. We wish you the best.

When I was 7 or 8, my Dad and I went on a rafting trip on the Wolf river with Ron and his sons. It was a mans trip riding manly rapids and waterfalls on a manly rubber raft. So, I was in the front and my Eagle Scout dad was steering and navigating our raft from the back. We were expertly carving up the first set of rapids when I spotted a strange happening. I saw a clean, sharp edge to the river with a delicate mist. It was also strangely quite. "WATERFALL," my dad yelled excitedly. My drawers filled in an instant. I was 7... or 8... or was it 10. We were approaching rapidly pun intended My dad yelling out paddling directions and kinda looking like Washington crossing the Delaware. The waterfall was upon us! We were going over. It was 100 feet tall (10ft really)! We won't make it. Screaming, we both went over the falls and hitting the bottom with paddles flying everywhere. the impact was crushing and we were drifting with out our motors. I spun around to receive emergency directions from my dad. He pointed in a master and commander way and bellowed, "Duck! Duck!" I loved my dad but was confused as to why at this time he was spotting birds. Yeah, I know he's an Eagle Scout and was always pointing out things he knew, but why now?? I looked around everywhere but couldn't spot the duck. "Where?! Where?!" I yelled back. A split second later I got hit in the head with a low hanging branch. My dad and I laughed until we peed as we slowly drifted into the brush along the side of the river. I loved my dad so much at that moment and this story has been family legend ever since.

I consider myself fortunate to have interacted with Jack during my tenure with Sharp's subsidiary in India. Someone who impressed me with his intellect and an equal dose of humility. May his soul rest in peace.

Jack was the best brother a girl could have. Whenever I needed guidance or help Jack was there to put things into perspective. His love for his family was an inspiration to me. Jack told me at one time that it was our responsibility to do the best that we could for our families. You could see his philosophy in the way that he lived. No matter what was happening in Jack's life, he never complained and always sincerely wanted to know if things were all right with me and my family. Jack quietly helped so many without fanfare. We will miss him terribly but his love for life will hopefully remain within us all. I am so proud to say that Jack Van Oosterhout was my big brother.

Uncle Jack and I shared the same birthday, July 31st. For as long as I can remember, he made a point to call me and send a card on our birthday. As I grew older, I did my best to call him and chat about what had transpired over the year past. Uncle Jack never forgot to call or send a card, even though I may have neglected to.
The last time I saw him was last year. We played some put-put golf and had a blast! He made it so fun, and he made a point to tally the strokes at the end of the game. I don't remember who won, and it didn't matter, we had a ton of laughs. Uncle Jack, Aunt Joan, his brother (Joe), and my mom, we had a great time!
Thanks for the memories Uncle Jack, I love you and I know you're in a better place.
Love,
Joey

Though i dont know much about the family in person, i always knew from Jack during our brief interactions about your home and the small farming that you did which made me always think of him as a caring and loving human being. He always expressed the same care when it came to his colleagues. May God give you strength and courage to overcome this huge loss

I have worked at Sharp Labs for more than six years, and though aware of Jack and his leadership, having seen and heard him speak on many occasions, I didn't really know him and we had never talked.
That is, until January of this year when, while backing my pickup out of the parking lot I struck another employee's car. I went into the building and asked around: "Who drives the little red MR-2?"
"Jack," a friend told me, and after I explained that I'd just severely dented it he added "Well, that might have been a career limiting move."
When I found Jack and shared the news, I also found a calm, rational, compassionate man with an amazing sense of humor and perspective.
After then, we'd chat whenever we bumped into each other, or he'd say hello with words more similar to "How's your driv'n, Hooper?"
Even in this short time, I've grown quite fond of him and will miss him very much. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I first met Jack in 1996. You don't often run across a man like Jack. Here's a man that could really lead people. He did it with integrity, compassion and sense of purpose. He had a way of allowing you to see the right thing to do and then get you to do it. No wishy-washy direction for popularity sake with Jack.
Here was a leader that could take information and use it to make correct decisions almost all the time. The way he'd make that face at you just at the "ah ha" time when you saw the light is so memorable.
He touched many many lives in a positive way.
Rest well my friend, my mentor.

Jack was a member of the Sharp Fitness Center. He was a regular in my fitness classes. I could always count on his upbeat personality and boy did he sweat!:) He would always warn his fellow students around him how much he would sweat!
Jack was dearly loved and I will miss him at the club!
Sincerely,

Dear Joan, Denise and Chris~ You are in our thoughts and prayers. We want you to know that our memories of Jack are such a blessing to us. The laughter we shared will always be remembered. By his example he taught us not only to live life but to enjoy the journey no matter what the obstacles. As a son he brought much joy and pride to our parents. He was a great brother who I always looked up to, was very proud of and loved. Christ's promise to us: "Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself, that where I am, there ye may be also. And where I go ye know, And the way ye know." John 14:1-4 Jesus also said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by Me." John 14:6 We find great comfort in these verses and pray that you do too. Remembering with you. Love~ Joe and Becky Phil 1:3
